Q&A; Physicians & sPas Dr. sean Maguire Physician's center for Beauty When it comes to cosmetic surgery, What is your personal philosophy? hoW has your practice adopted neW technologies? In this day and age, I think it's of paramount importance that results are as natural looking as possible. Especially in Louisville, Kentucky which remains a somewhat conservative town. It's unlike places like Florida or the West Coast where it's more common for patients to want to look like they've had plastic surgery. For some parts of the country it's almost a badge of honor for women to look overly pulled, overly flled or obviously augmented. That's less common in Louisville, and luckily I've been blessed to have a practice that has attracted reasonable patients with reasonable goals and realistic expectations. The highest compliment I can be given is when my patients tell me that no one knows they've had cosmetic surgery. Particularly with facial cosmetic surgery. They just look healthier and better rested - a slightly more youthful version of themselves. That's very gratifying. There have been some exciting new developments in technology in recent years in the feld of nonsurgical body contouring. In particular, CoolSculpting has represented a huge advance in the feld of nonsurgical fat reduction. It's an offce-based procedure with literally zero downtime that results in substantial improvements for the abdomen and love handle areas. We've seen a lot of technology come to the feld in recent years, often with great fanfare, only to be disappointed by long-term results. CoolSculpting works though, and for the right patient can make signifcant, long-lasting improvements. in Which areas do you specialize? Having been trained in Head and Neck Surgery and board certifed in that specialty before going on to complete Plastic Reconstructive Surgery training, I have a special interest in facial cosmetic surgery. I also completed a fellowship in Aesthetic and Laser Surgery with Dr. S. Larry Schlesinger in Maui, Hawaii and have tremendous experience in breast and body contouring surgery. What treatments do you suggest for someone on a budget? Botox treatments and dermal fller injections are two options that are fairly cost-effective. These have to be repeated, of course, with Botox lasting 3–4 months and dermal fller injections lasting nine months to a year. The most costeffective surgical procedures include eyelid surgery and neck liposuction. Both of these procedures, when appropriate, can make huge improvements at a pretty reasonable cost and with fairly limited recovery time. I think it will be here for a long time to come. What are some of the benefits of fillers? The use of dermal fllers such as Restylane and Juvederm has expanded over the last several years. We've advanced beyond just simply flling lines of the face or augmenting lips. More often in my practice I'm using these products to restore areas of volume loss in the face, including the cheeks, the under eye hollow, the temples and the jawline. We can make signifcant improvements that look very natural. There is an artistry to this as there is with any cosmetic procedure and it's important that things are not overdone. What are your favorite skin care products? We carry only physician-directed skin care lines that are backed by science and that I know have real effcacy. The Obagi line is the most well known of these and its strength is in the treatment of pigmentation and skin discolorations. SkinMedica is an excellent line of anti-aging skin care products that utilize growth factors. Their products are backed with real science and my favorite of their products is TNS Essential Serum. It is formulated with a combination of growth factors and antioxidants and is a great all-in-one skin care product. located at 4600 Shelbyville road #220 | 502.897.7546 FA L L 2 0 1 3 w w w. v o i c e - t r i b u n e . c o m | The Voice oF LouisviLLe 55
